The Rio de Janeiro Centenary St Andrew Day was held on Wednesday 29th November in the Green Club of the Paissandú Athletic Club. The turnout was good, and the evening ended in true Scottish fashion with some energetic Scottish Country dancing.

We celebrated a very different St Andrew Day this year! After 98 years in Brazil, and as the start to our lead-up to our Centenary celebration, we held a very Brazilian evening with Chorinho followed by Jaime Aroxa’s dance group.
This was a really energetic evening with lots of Brazilian dancing, together with the members of the dance group, and Scottish Country dancing, including many first-timers. The mixture of Forro, Lambada, Chorinho, Samba, The Dashing White Sergeant and Strip the Willow was electrifyingly eclectic and left people utterly exhausted, but notably happy.
The Hotel Internacional served one of the best buffet dinners we’ve had at any of our events. Our thanks go to all our sponsors: Hotel Internacional, Mistura Classica and Allied Domecq, who enabled us to produce such a successful event.
If you thought this event was good, just wait for our 99 th and then our 100 th year in Brazil celebrations!

St. Andrew´s Day - 30th November
St. Andrew, the First Apostle, became the patron saint of Scotland after Robert Bruce´s victory at the Battle of Bannockburn, in 1314. He was martyred on an x-shaped cross, hence being associated with the saltire. The Saltire became the national flag of Scotland in 1385.
On St. Andrew´s Day, Scots celebrate their success and rich cultural history with ceilidhs and other events. It is a moment when Scots and friends can get together to promote all that is good about Scotland.
The St. Andrew Society of Rio de Janeiro has also celebrated this date over the years in many different ways. Originally, a formal dinner with guest speakers, including from brethren societies. In more recent years, with day trips on "saveiros" (schooners) to Itacuruçá or informal affairs. It is held on the Friday or Saturday closest to the 30th November.
Below you will see the programme for the celebration of St. Andrew held in 1930.
