to be held on the 6th September in Tersópolis
The 2006 Quaich was a really good weekend. We reckon it was the 21st Quaich held at what has become its home in Teresópolis. So much our home that it poured with rain while everyone was playing the first nine. A short hold-up in play (with caipirinhas for some) and back out into the deluge. Fortunately, it cleared up and we finished reasonably dry. Our winner this year, Steve Rimmer, came up to Teresópolis telling everyone who would listen that he intended to win the Quaich as a tribute to the memory of his dad. When the chips finally came down, he actually achieved his aim and now has his name engraved on the ancient trophy. But not without drama. Two cards were handed in showing 35 points, Steve’s and Edward Byers. The two of them elected to only be told who had won at the party in the evening. With the tension rising, it was announced that Steve’s card had two errors in counting the points, but both of them turned out to be in his favour and thus he achieved his declared aim. Patti Tate sportingly took the other prize and now has a new addition to her kitchen in the form of the wooden spoon. The Scots are always good for a party and, even though our friends from Petrópolis called in sick, Audrey led the dancing with her usual enthusiasm and we danced for as long as our legs allowed...Naturally, the whisky being passed round in the Quaich helped a lot. Thanks are due to the Teresópolis club, who make us so welcome each year, and to Philip and Suzan Healey for all their organisation and getting everyone motivated.

Edward Byers receives the Generosity Prize, for allowing someone else to win.
Jimmy Frew can be seen letting it be know that two wins is more than enough.

Mary Crawshaw's ability to Survive the World's Worst Caddy left
her head too big for her ribbon.

Steve ? Uriah Heep ? Rimmer is "ever so humble" about achieving a
"Surprising" number of par points.

Alan Smith, the Most Improved Player, proudly displays the socks he pulled up.

"The Fastest Player", Fiona Brown, just caught by the flash camera.

Disappointingly, Gordon Smith could only scrape the "Runner-up" for the Wooden Spoon.

The History Prize went to Stewart Healey, history student from Edinburgh: "Never before in the history of golf, has anyone traveled to far to achieve so little."

The runner-up to the Quaich Trophy: John Byers

Nick Fletcher, proud winner of The Wooden Spoon

Nigel Woodcock, this year's champion and deserving winner of the
traditional Quaich Trophy

After being filled with Whisky, the Quaich was enjoyed by all. The bottle, which had been Seymore Marvyn's and had been donated by his daughter, Jenny Byers, provided a tribute and many toasts to the memory of one of Rio's greatest characters and finest golfers.
This tournament has been held since 1928 and may be considered one of the oldest, if the oldest, golf tournament in Brazil. It has been highly successful in recent years and it is held over a weekend in the spectacular and challenging Teresópolis Golf Club.
The Quaich competition is an 18-hole Par Point (Stableford) competition for paid-up (as at 31st July of the year) members of the Society and is played using seven-eighths of an official handicap. Handicaps should be a recent handicap from a Golf Club operating under the R & A or USGA rules and, as in previous years, men will receive a maximum of 21 strokes (7/8ths of 24) and ladies 28 strokes (7/8ths of 32). The organising committee has discretion to award handicaps of up to 16 to anyone whose handicap is out of date.
Newcomers to the Society, who have joined after 1st August, should contact the organising committee (under Robin Brown), which will have discretion to waive the deadline.
Everyone is requested to advise what time and with which group they wish to play. This will allow for a minimum of order in the proceedings. Morning play is recommended as it often rains in the afternoon. Bear in mind that, as guests of the Teresopolis Golf Club we do not wish to upset the games of members, especially when coming round to the second nine on the nine-hole course.
The Sunday game is a Pinehurst Foursome played in groups, which will include members of Teresopolis Golf Club and members of the Saint Andrews Society. The Society provides the prizes for the competition.
The Ceilidh at which the Quaich is presented includes a simple, tasty meal at a moderate price. Drinks (except for the contents of the Quaich) are available at a cash bar.
The Quaich weekend has always been a lively yet informal affair. The Teresópolis Golf Club members are wonderful hosts and the Society reciprocates by staging what many members of the Club regard as the best party of the year, with dancing (Scottish and modern).
